Old Tools are Old Friends

Harbor Freight Tools
Harbor Freight Tools

Next to shopping for tools at used classified ads and flea markets, Harbor Freight has the lowest price where you can save the most collecting your essential tools that fit your life style. Once you pick up their catalog it's hard not to check off a dozen or more items for mail order. Let me tell you this happens to me all the time because I love collecting tools especially for fixing and restoring cars. Fortunately I was able to save much more on shipping cost when Harbor Freight opened a local store about 3 miles from home. Before you shop first check their store locator to see if you can save on shipping even if you have to drive up to 50 miles assuming your transportation vehicle has decent highway mileage because the saving will be substantial since most tools can be costly to ship given their hefty weight. Having said this it should be noted Harbor Freight tools are not of the most durable, high quality build but then for the price you really cannot expect everything. Some people have complained about premature tool failure or breakage which can happen depending on how you apply it. If you are a professional who works with tools all day long in high stress environment your best to seek your tools elsewhere. But for most home owners and the average hobbyist Harbor Freight tools serve their purpose well. Having used my HF tools for years I have yet to experience a breakage or total failure. Some of my HF tools do appear to rust a bit sooner than the more expensive chromed tools. But this can be easily fixed with a little grease coating which keeps them going until today. I would advise you, if you can, to visit a store in person to examine the quality and build of tools you're interested. Chances are for the price you will find they are hard to pass up. With a little loving care and proper application (don't use a flat screw driver to do the job of a large crow bar) their tools can last a very long time making them your best investment.

Replacement Tool Parts

Only a few generation ago traditional families around the nation could proudly display valuable collection of functional tools handed down from their parents and grand parents. With proper maintenance and care this tradition was passed down to future generations which then ended perhaps less than a century. Having become a disposable society, thanks to the corporate media mass marketing, we now are inclined to dispose fixable tools at the simplest mechanical malfunction. Now is the time to resist the impulse to "discard", to rediscover the skill and ability to fix our own tools. Older tools may have a few less whistles and bells but they are built better as industry manufacturers seek short cuts to build cheaper with more breakable parts which only encourage and speed up the disposable cycle. The benefits are many, we'll retain more of our hard earned financial resources while enabling ourselves to a higher degree of self sufficiency. By rediscovering the ability to fix our tools we open a long forgotten door of opportunities: To restore, free, disposed tools which you can resell or add to your vital tool collection. You can place a "wanted" classified encouraging people to let you collect their broken tools instead of adding to the land fill. If you were searching for a possible new professional opportunity this might be one of your leads. So the next time one of your power tool gives you the hiccups think about repairing before disposing. At the least take it apart and test the vital mechanicals to learn how to locate the problem and fix it. Even if you do decide to buy a new tool replacement there's nothing wrong having a second backup copy you repaired to keep you going when Murphy's law strikes again - another breakage at the most inconvenient moment when the job must go on.
